From SALOMONE CALEF the SACCARIA TRADITION
Searching with infinite patience the centuries old archives kept at the Town Hall, it is possible to piece together, through the anecdotes, the history of Senigallia: its social life, its economic development and growth, its evolution in the course of time, its fortunes, its tragedies, and its traditions. It is right here that the Calef family found a document, which was much worn and had turned yellow, where it was said that on 17 August 1806 a small ship ("un barchetto") cast anchor at the jetty in the canal harbour. The small ship was loaded with coffee, pepper and, as the document oddly reads, camping gear (it was later found that such camping gear consisted of hoes, spades and shovels, to be used to work in the fields, not materials to make a stay on the delightful velvety beach more pleasant). The small ship was coming from Ancona, which was a free port and the goods stowed had been imported by an ancestor of the Calef family, Salomone Calef, the first to introduce coffee, produced in far away tropical countries, to the Marche region, marketing it at the duty-free Fair in Senigallia. There is an historical void from that year until 1882 when Ciro Calef, perhaps inspired by his ancestor, set-up a commercial business: The Calef Ciro & Co. From COCOA to COFFEE Ciro Calef spent his childhood in Gubbio, until his father, a teacher, migrated for work to Senigallia on the coast. Here Ciro, who was then sixteen, commenced work with a small local firm, which he later bought. He started a business importing, marketing, and roasting cocoa. The business was unsuccessful, the product did not sell, and Ciro's scarce earnings drove him to Trieste, which even then was an important port for coffee trade and a crucial cultural meeting point for central Europe. In Trieste, Ciro bought the basic machinery to be able to diversify the business, allowing him in a short time to lay down the foundations of the Saccaria Company, a well-established and booming business, which today is very successful and able to establish a modern culture of espresso coffee, improved by ongoing production and commercial strategies. CIRO, stakes everything on ALBERTO
The story of the Saccaria Company from its origin is told passionately by Alberto Calef, who is still today, a vigorous man and the president of the company. He follows, with paternal pride, the professional and technical evolution of his two children, Renzo, managing director, and Lucia, in charge of the quality control. "Ciro Calef was my grandfather. He was hoping his son Giorgio would be active in leading the company after his death. Obviously my father was not cut out to be a businessman and an industrialist. He took a degree in medicine and became a paediatrician. I don' t know if my grandfather felt disappointed, perhaps not, because he staked his hopes on me. I went to live with him. He brought me up, first as a son, and later as an industrialist. I remember the times in Senigallia when the company was located right opposite the railway station; I remember the racial persecution, which forced my grandfather to change the business name from Ciro Calef & Company to Coadria, a name which was more welcome to the fascist regime."
